The Watchdog with David Bozell
Americans are increasingly watching two completely different movies when it comes to the news.
The conservative ecosystem has been talking about President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act almost nonstop — on radio, podcasts, social media, and conservative outlets. Meanwhile, if you rely on the traditional media, you would barely know the bill exists.
That contrast perfectly illustrates the split information environment we’re living in.
The SAVE America Act itself is straightforward: proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections and stronger safeguards for voter rolls. Poll after poll shows Americans overwhelmingly support those ideas.
Yet when the House passed the bill on February 11, the national media simply looked the other way.
Our researchers examined the nightly and morning newscasts on ABC, CBS, and NBC. From February 11 through March 10, those programs devoted exactly zero seconds to the legislation.
Not a segment. Not a mention.
We then examined the major news apps — Apple News, Google News, MSN, and Yahoo News.
Across 180 top stories we reviewed, only Yahoo News carried coverage of the SAVE Act — two articles, both negative and both from left-leaning outlets.
That’s not a coincidence. It’s bias by omission.
As I mentioned recently on Sean Spicer’s podcast, election security has become one of the defining issues of this political era. The media know that perfectly well, which is why they’re trying to keep this bill out of the national conversation as we head toward the midterms.
When Americans are allowed to hear the debate, public opinion tends to be overwhelming.
At MRC, our job is simple: when the press ignore something this important, we document it and bring it into the open.
And we can only do that because of you.
Thank you for standing with us.
Take it easy,
David Bozell
