Matthews Preposterously Claims Obama Added 'Only 13 People' to Federal Workforce [UPDATED: Matthews Re-Records Audio]
[UPDATE, 8:55 PM EST: Two hours later, in the otherwise identical 7 PM EST re-play, MSNBC inserted a new graphic and a new audio overlay in which Matthews corrected his incompetence without noting any change from his first broadcast: Video below features both versions. In the 5 PM EST hour, Matthews claimed 'the federal workforce totaled forty-four hundred and thirty people in 2009 when Obama took office. In 2010, a year later, the number increased to forty-four forty-three people – a difference of only thirteen people.' In the re-do, Matthews realized 'the federal workforce totaled four million, four hundred and thirty thousand in 2009...']
It's bizarre that Matthews would credulously repeat such obviously wrong information. After making his grossly incorrect statement, the liberal anchor lectured, "I know it's always great rhetoric to say the government is ballooning, exploding with people. The government is getting bigger and bigger to this leviathan. And it's not." Except, it is.
Audio, MP3 clip which matches the above video with excerpts from the 5 and 7 PM EST editions of Hardball.
To suggest that the government isn't "ballooning" or "getting bigger" is absurd. Fiscal spending in 2008 was just under $3 trillion. It was $3.7 trillion by 2010. That's an increase of more than 23 percent.Shouldn't have Matthews (or one of his producers) realized what he was saying? Will MSNBC correct?
Matthews during the 5 PM EST live program:
'Well, here's the numbers, by the way, about the size of government. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel, the federal workforce totaled forty-four hundred and thirty people in 2009 when Obama took office. In 2010, a year later, the number increased to forty-four forty-three people – a difference of only thirteen people.'
Matthews, in a new audio track for the otherwise unchanged 7 PM EST feed:
'By the way, here are the numbers. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel, the federal workforce totaled four million, four hundred and thirty thousand in 2009 when Obama took office. And in 2010 that number essentially stayed the same: just over four million, four hundred and forty thousand.'
At 5 PM, the on-screen graphic listed 2009 federal employees at '4,430" and 2010 at '4,443.' Two hours later, the on-screen graphic was updated to '4.43 MILLION' and '4.44 MILLION.'
